Foreshore Works

• Demolition of existing holiday park and infrastructure
• Excavate 35,000m3 for revetment walls
• Supply and place 47,000 tonnes of Rock Revetment Wall including temporary sheet piling and de-watering

The Kingscliff foreshore project was situated within a tidal zone, necessitating the constant use of temporary enclosures and dewatering to facilitate ongoing construction activities. To create the necessary construction zones, temporary embankments were erected using sheet piling. Notably, both the revetment wall and the concrete step structure were located within a 2-meter proximity of the tidal area.

• Typical Revetment Detail section showing a three-layer rock system within 2m of a tidal zone. Rock protection varied from 320mm nominal diameter to 1480mm diameter depending on the layer. Each layer had to be specifically picked and placed in order to ensure that there would be adequate protection within the tidal zone. The rock protection area covered a total of 365 LM, with approximately 1400t of sub-layer (D50=0.32m), 14,200t of secondary layer (D50=0.69m) and 26,800t of primary layer rock (D50=1.48m) placed over the length of the sea wall.
• The project contained a total of 277 permanent piles. These included a breakdown of the following:
  • Soft Secant piles: 115 no. off x 500Dia x 5.5 – 10.2m deep
  • Hard Secant piles: 118 no. off x 500D x 5.5 – 10.2m deep
  • Pile-Support piles: 44 no. off x 500-600Dia x 5.07 -11.2m deep

The project was centrally located within the Kingscliff township, surrounded by key establishments such as a Surf Club, Bowling Club, and a variety of businesses, including accommodation resorts, restaurants, cafes, a hotel, a chemist, and numerous others.

To ensure the effective engagement of project stakeholders, a transparent and open approach to communication was established with the Council, the Kingscliff Chamber of Commerce, and other relevant parties to ensure local businesses were kept up to date with project works and minimise disruption to businesses.

Additionally, the project had to navigate the challenge of coping with a significant flow of pedestrians in close proximity to the construction site.
