In February 2022, a severe weather event moved its way from South East Queensland (SEQ) into Northern New South Wales (NNSW). The devastation it caused in both SEQ and Northern NSW was unfathomable.

SEE Civil promptly contacted Tweed Shire Council in the aftermath of the event, and within two days of meeting and discussing requirements, SEE Civil had mobilised over fifty (50) items of plant and workforce to assist with initial clean-up efforts.

Within another two days, a further one hundred (100) items of plant and workforce were mobilised bringing the total number to approximately one hundred and fifty (150).

This equipment and workforce were organized into up to ten crews, each working up to seven days a week and twelve hours a day, with the entire operation coordinated from SEE Civil’s Chinderah depot.

Following the outstanding efforts by the SEE Civil team, Tweed Shire Council reached out and asked for our assistance in repairing the local roads and making them safe for motorists and road users.

In response SEE Civil was engaged by Tweed Shire Council as part of a collaborative Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase to design remediation options for eight (8) major landslips located throughout Tweed Shire.

Project Scope

  • Thousands of tonnes of kerb side rubbish removed and taken to landfill.
  • Hundreds of trees removed from roadways and mulched on site to aid in bank stabilisation.
  • Rock stabilisation of batters.
  • Removal of loose embankment materials to prevent further landslips.
  • Streets cleaned of mud and sediment following inundation.
  • Causeways reinstated using concrete overlays and pipe extensions in flowing waterways.
  • Bollards and traffic controls placed to direct the public away from hazardous locations.
  • Road rehabilitation and overlays to pavements that had been badly scoured or washed away.
  • Fleets of trucks, excavators and bobcats organised to work on multiple fronts across the Shire in both an urban and rural environment.
Key Construction Elements

  • SEE Civil donated a 6 x 3 site office for the use of the Tweed Shire Community Flood Recovery Hub which was a temporary facility established to provide food and clothing to those impacted by the floods. The Hub was located at the Indoor Sports Centre located in Chinderah.
  • SEE Civil managed coordination meetings from their Chinderah depot. These meetings included participants from Council, Public Works Advisory, SES and the Australian Defence Force (ADF). A further outcome of these meetings was the direct engagement of SEE Civil plant and equipment by the ADF for assistance with similar works in surrounding Northern NSW council regions. This additional plant and equipment was provided over and above that already committed within Tweed Shire and without impacting on the ongoing operation.
