Status

Current

Creating a new gateway into the Caloundra CBD and supporting the future growth of one of Queensland’s fastest growing regions.

SEE Civil is delivering the Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade on behalf of Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, a major transport infrastructure project that will create a new gateway into the Caloundra CBD and transform connectivity across the region. The project combines complex road construction, active transport infrastructure, underground services and environmental management works within a highly constrained urban environment, supporting the Sunshine Coast’s future growth and transport needs.

Project Scope

The Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade involves the delivery of a new 1.6km transport corridor and supporting infrastructure designed to improve network capacity, connectivity and accessibility across Caloundra. The project incorporates major road construction, underground services, active transport infrastructure, intersection upgrades and urban enhancement works within a live urban environment.

Key works include:

  • Construction of a new road connection between Omrah Avenue and Bowman Road.
  • Extension of Third Avenue to two lanes in each direction between Nicklin Way and Arthur Street.
  • Delivery of a new four-way signalised intersection at Nicklin Way and Third Avenue.
  • Construction of additional traffic lanes and signalised intersections along Oval Avenue.
  • Installation of underground drainage and watermain infrastructure.
  • Construction of a pedestrian underpass at West Terrace.
  • Delivery of new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, signalised crossings and shared pathways.
  • Upgraded street lighting, landscaping and urban amenity works.
  • Traffic staging and management across multiple active road corridors throughout construction.
Challenges

Delivering a new transport corridor through an established urban environment presents significant construction, environmental and stakeholder challenges. The project requires careful staging to maintain traffic movements and access to surrounding businesses and residences while progressing major roadworks, underground services and active transport infrastructure across multiple locations simultaneously.

Key project challenges include:

  • Delivering major construction works within a live urban traffic network while maintaining safe access for the community and local businesses.
  • Coordinating simultaneous construction activities across multiple project sections.
  • Managing environmental obligations associated with EPBC-approved works and protection of sensitive environmental values.
  • Minimising disruptions from noise, dust, traffic changes and construction activities over a multi-year delivery program.
  • Undertaking extensive underground service, drainage and road infrastructure works in a highly constrained corridor.
Solutions

SEE Civil is applying its extensive experience in complex transport infrastructure delivery to safely and efficiently manage the project’s construction challenges. Through staged delivery methodologies, detailed traffic management planning, robust environmental controls and proactive stakeholder engagement, SEE is minimising disruption while maintaining construction productivity and achieving key project milestones.

Our approach includes:

  • Comprehensive traffic management planning to minimise impacts on road users.
  • Close collaboration with Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to coordinate project staging and delivery.
  • Robust environmental management systems incorporating erosion and sediment controls, habitat protection measures and environmental monitoring.
  • Proactive stakeholder engagement and communication programs to keep residents, businesses and road users informed throughout construction.
  • Strategic resource allocation to safely progress multiple work fronts concurrently while maintaining project efficiency.
Outcomes and Deliverables

Upon completion, the Caloundra Transport Corridor Upgrade will deliver:

  • New gateway into the Caloundra CBD.
  • Improved regional connectivity.
  • Reduced congestion at critical intersections.
  • Safer more accessible pedestrian and cycling networks.
  • Increased network capacity to support population growth.
  • Enhanced access for residents, visitors and businesses.
  • Future-ready infrastructure supporting economic development across the Sunshine Coast.
