SEE Civil was engaged to construct the Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) Andoom Haul Road project. We have constructed the 11.1km Wallam Haul Road to facilitate future operations at Andoom Mine.

The project is located at Rio Tinto’s Andoom Bauxite mine. Wallam Haul Road is located approximately 35km north of the RTA Weipa Campus. Generally, the scope of works includes earthworks, foundation improvements, roadworks, drainage works, concrete structural works and all associated works.

Project Scope

  • 500,000m3 of Topsoil Stripping of alignment, sediment basins and borrow areas
  • 616,000m2 of Ground Surface Treatment (GST) for main alignment
  • 434,000m3 of Embankment Fill material won from alignment & basins
  • 447,000m3 of Pavement material (Sub-Base and Base Course) won from basins & borrows
  • Construction of 18 sediment basins for future erosion and sediment controls
  • Installation of 6 Corrugated Steel Pipe (CSP) drainage lines across alignment from 0.75m diameter to 3m diameter
  • Placement of Rock Scour protection for both sediment basins and drainage lines
  • Construction of Sediment Fencing on both the North and South extends of the works boundary.

Environmental Management

The project is in a rural setting with a range of environmental values present. To maintain these values to the greatest degree possible, an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) was developed. Environmental risk assessments were completed, and records of controls required to remove, manage, or minimise impacts for the project. Environmental components of management for this project included:

  • Cultural Heritage Management – Wallam Haul Road is located within 1km of an existing cultural heritage site
  • Bush Fire Management – Fire is a natural feature of Cape York Landscapes. Combined with the extreme temperatures and dry conditions, bush fires must be managed carefully
  • Natural Fauna & Flora Management – Numerous threatened fauna & flora species were present throughout the project area
  • Noise, Vibration & Air Quality Control – Extensive dust suppression was required throughout the works.
Logistics

SEE Civil was required to barge all plant and equipment to and from Weipa via Cairns due to the wet season and road load limit constraints. The return barge trip took 2 weeks to complete and SEE required 4 barges to mobilise all plant to site.
