Wave 2 represented a significant milestone in the Pacific Highway Upgrade Woolgoolga to Ballina (W2B) project. SEE Civil was awarded the inaugural package, focusing on critical early works covering a 3.8 km segment.

This phase encompassed several essential components, such as foundational treatment for soft soil, the implementation of an advanced stormwater drainage system, wick drain installation, geotechnical instrumentation, the use of high-strength geosynthetic materials, and the construction of embankment fill in a flood-prone area.

Notably, this phase also included temporary pavement improvements, which not only enhanced the existing intersection but also introduced new gate access points along the Pacific Highway alignment.

Project Scope

  • Traffic management of the Pacific Highway.
  • Soft soil foundation treatment using 72,000m3 R31 specification drainage rock.
  • Stormwater drainage.
  • 416,000m of vertical wick drains.
  • Installation of complex Geotechnical instrumentation for soft soil settlement monitoring. These included:
    • vibrating wire, bored nested and standing piezometers
    • inclinometer
    • settlement plates
    • data loggers
    • hydrostatic profile gauges.
  • 198,000m3 imported earth fill material using high-strength geosynthetic.
  • Design and construction of deceleration (slip) lanes on the Pacific Highway to facilitate site vehicle and haulage vehicle movements.
  • The project was on a floodplain with a significant presence of acid sulfate soils.
  • Temporary pavement works.
