The Tallebudgera Creek Training Wall is located at the Northern End of Palm Beach and acts to formalise the entrance to Tallebudgera Creek, while providing a stabilising effect to the beach to the south.

The project works consist of:

  • 320m of rock wall structure, comprising a central core of rock material protected by Armour stone.
  • Renewal of the structure is required to ensure that the integrity of the structure is maintained and continues to function effectively and safely.
  • The renewal works involve re-using existing rock material and the supply of additional rock and other construction materials to achieve the design.
  • Extensive site improvements including pathways and landscaping.

Project Scope

  • Establish site access and compound to beach access, several streets away from worksite (800m).
  • Supply and install of 15,000 tonne, of Class 1 Armourstone, of between 5t and 9t rocks.
  • Ferry large scale rocks safely along the beachfront, to seawall construction site, maintaining beach traffic with traffic escort to site.
  • Supply and install 5,000 tonne, of Class 2 Armourstone, of between 100kg and 350kg rocks.
  • Hundreds of m3 of bulk earthworks to remodel to seawall core.
  • Landscape works, entry features and a concrete path to end of seawall.
  • All works and presentation to City of Gold Coast Standards and Specifications.
Key Construction Elements and Innovations

  • In order to handle the large rock installation a custom rock grab was engineered to fit SEE Civil’s 70t Excavator.
  • To assist with haul road management and public interaction SEE Civil purchased a customised ATV to pilot the front-end loader ferrying the rocks from the site compound along the beach to their ultimate location at the training wall.
  • Programming for the works was a challenge throughout the duration of the project with consideration needing to be given to items not typically encountered on a civil construction project, such as:
    • Ongoing interaction with the public using the beach which doubled as the haul road for transport of the imported rock.
    • Tidal movements which impact the haul route and limit available area on the training wall to complete the works.
  • For this reason, some sections of the wall were required to be scheduled for construction on key dates that large tidal movements occurred, allowing access to the lower sections of the wall.
