[PROJECTS]

Gold Coast Airport
Taxiway Charlie Link

Client

Gold Coast Airport

Location

Gold Coast, Queensland

Value

$11m

Duration

March 2020 – December 2020

Status

Complete

Working airside and within the constraints of an operational airport had been a challenge. The project was successfully completed just in time for this taxiway to be an option for aircraft-carrying visitors, officials, and athletes for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Improved operational efficiency and increased aircraft taxi routing options have been delivered by this project.

SEE Civil had worked with the client to re-program the works schedule so the new taxiway was commissioned and operational prior to peak travel periods during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, at no additional cost to the client.

Works were constructed in an operational airside environment (including night works and runway/taxiway closures) to construct 450 meters of new Code E taxiway pavement at Gold Coast Airport, linking two existing taxiways. Works also included asphalt overlay and strengthening of four other existing taxiways.

Project Scope

  • Staged construction of a new piece of pavement connecting two taxiways.
  • Excavation of in-situ existing materials including existing asphalt.
  • Importation and placements of processed fill materials, including a cement treated crushed rock basecourse.
  • Placement of asphalt surface over the fill platform, including under nightshift.
  • Installation of airfield lighting and drainage along the linear alignment (approximately 475 metres).
  • Works within a secure and high-risk airside environment.
  • Logistics associated with vehicle movements as all movements had to be escorted by Gold Coast Airport staff.
  • Close liaison with airport operational and logistical staff to successful complete works during runway and taxiway closures on nightshift.

Key Features

  • 73,500 square metres of site works areas.
  • 13,800 square metres of subgrade materials.
  • Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) project compliant delivery.
