Dawson Mine: Three Chain Road and
Dawson Highway Upgrade

Client

Anglo American

Location

Moura, Queensland

Value

$25m

Duration

June 2019 – June 2020

Status

Complete

The Three Chain Road and Dawson Highway Upgrade project saw the construction of a new local road alongside and through Anglo American’s Dawson Mine in Moura, Central Queensland. A 3-span bridge was constructed over the local mine road and operating coal conveyors, while a 75m BEBO Arch was constructed for the loaded mine trucks to travel over top, while local vehicles travelled through.

The project also constructed the duplication of the existing Dawson Highway between the intersections of Three Chain Road and Moura Baralaba Road.

Project Scope

  • 250,000m3 bulk earthworks
  • 3-span bridge over road and mine conveyors
  • 75m BEBO Arch
  • Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) foundation improvement
  • Stormwater CSP, RCBC and RCP culverts
  • Pavements, seal, asphalt
  • Road furniture and finishing works
  • Highway tie-ins and traffic switches
  • Landscaping
Key Construction Elements

  • Each BEBO Arch precast unit weighed 22t, and required three cranes on site – one to assist with the dual rotation lift, the other two installing together to secure the two units in place to create the Arch. The BEBO Arch is now used by the Dawson Mine for loaded mine trucks to travel over top, while local vehicles travel through.
  • The Project team worked 24/7 for one month to largely complete the Zone A, B, C & D backfill to the BEBO Arch. This activity was of major importance to the mine as it drove the switch of the primary haulage fleet over the arch.
  • Foundation improvements by use of a Rapid Impact Compactor (RIC), enabled the existing mine overburden material within the road reserve to be compacted to a depth of 4-8m below. This reduced the quantity of bulk excavation and embankment material to be placed providing construction cost savings for the client.
  • Completion of the 3-span bridge over local mine road and operating coal conveyors required detailed planning and execution to ensure no disruptions to any mine operations which SEE Civil achieved.
  • Dawson Highway upgrade works required specific traffic control staging and detailed tie-ins to maintain highway traffic flows and minimise impact to the local community.
