The latest gender pay gap data released by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) has once again put a national spotlight on how Australian organisations are progressing on workplace gender equality.

Recent analysis reported by ABC News highlighted that while Australia’s overall gender pay gap is continuing to narrow, structural challenges remain; particularly in industries where workforces are still heavily gender segregated. For sectors such as construction, improving gender representation and ensuring equitable outcomes across the workforce remains an important priority.

Against this backdrop, SEE Group is proud to have recorded the lowest ‘Average Base Salary’ Gender Pay Gap (GPG) within our industry peer cohort for the second consecutive year.

This cohort comprises civil construction companies that meet the R5 prequalification category under the Austroads National Prequalification System for Civil (Road and Bridge) Construction, as referenced in the current prequalification status of construction contractors, published by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Across this group of R5 prequalified organisations, reported results vary significantly, ranging from 0.071 at SEE Group to as high as 0.393 across other companies within the same cohort.

Gender pay gap reporting does not compare men and women performing the same roles. Rather, it measures the difference between the average earnings of men and women across an entire organisation, often influenced by factors such as workforce composition, occupational distribution and representation in leadership roles.

These metrics provide an important benchmark for organisations seeking to understand how they compare within their industry and where progress is being made.

For SEE Group, achieving the lowest reported gap across our cohort reflects a sustained focus on creating an environment where people are recognised and rewarded fairly, and where opportunities for growth and progression are accessible across the business.

This commitment to building a positive and inclusive workplace culture is also reflected in our certification as a Great Place to Work organisation, recognition based on independent employee feedback measuring trust, pride and workplace experience.

As the construction industry continues to evolve, improving gender balance and equity across the workforce remains an ongoing journey for the sector as a whole. SEE Group is proud to be contributing to that progress and remains committed to continuing to raise the bar for what equitable and inclusive workplaces can look like in civil construction.
